Pricing
The G920 Wheel/Pedal set has a street price of $359 and the Driving Force Shifter is $69. Given that the shifter is completely optional, we’d consider the G920 itself good value – especially when you consider the experience that it delivers. The build quality is great and it feels like a peripheral that will go the distance. The true value comes from the additional enjoyment you can get from the compatible titles over a keyboard/gamepad experience. For these reasons, the G920 receives the ‘Value Award’
Conclusion
The motors are strong and the wheel does ‘clunk’ around as it does its job. This isn’t a negative but it is worth noting that if you plan to use this in a shared house or in the next room from someone trying to sleep, the noise could be a problem. If the force feedback was compromised for quieter operation, it would be a completely different product in terms of immersion so this is just one of those things to be aware of but by no means a reason not to buy the G920.
At the end of 2 months, I’m still in two minds over the shifter. I liked it but think that it’s purely for enthusiasts so I’d recommend grabbing the G920 and then deciding if you need more than the wheel mounted paddles.
A new graphics card can change your gaming experience by way of more effects and smoother frame rates, a new keyboard or mouse can also make a difference with a more comfortable or responsive connection between you and the actions of your protagonist. The G920 is the biggest true ‘game changer’ I can recall experiencing in a long time. The new control and immersion that the G920 delivers has renewed my interest in a genre that I’d really started to lose interest in. NFS and Project Cars feel like very different games with the G920 and if you like your racing, this is something you should start saving for.
