Impressions: Battlefield 3

The graphics were always talked up, early previews had many of us in awe of what was to come, others suspicious that the game-play video was somehow ‘enhanced’ (read faked or dodgy) and it’s fair to say that almost everyone following this title was nervous about the system requirements. The reality? It really is that good. Smoke, dust, lighting, environments and general scenery is amazing when considering other titles available – it’s a real step up from the previous Battlefield Bad Company 2, which was no ugly duckling by any means.

Granted, we played it on a single stock GTX 580 and it maxed out the GPU at 1920×1080 but that was with almost everything as high as it would go. Mid level graphics cards can have a good experience from all reports but owners of integrated or entry level graphics cards should probably look elsewhere or look to upgrade.

The sound in this game is possibly the best and most immersive of any game in its class. The whistles of rounds as they pass by, snaps cracks of nearby impacts and the thuds of explosions are very clear and well positioned. When suppressed or seriously wounded, the world is muffled and your ears will ring. Without a doubt, this is the best sounding first person shooter we have experienced.
