Impressions: Battlefield 3

Assault
This job is simple – kill people and revive people. In what has been an interesting shift from the Assault class in BC2 where it was a source of ammunition, the Assault now performs the medic role instead. One of the earlier unlocks is a grenade launcher – when equipped, it makes the assault class even more lethal. The grenade launcher is very effective against vehicles and infantry, out in the open or inside fired down corridors.

Support
What’s not to like about a guy that can resupply team mates with ammunition and also carries a big machine gun? The support class is the king of suppression and can keep someone pinned long enough for someone else to finish the job. As the weapon unlocks progress better sights and magazine options become available, making him more accurate and less easy to spot.

Engineer
The more things change, the more they stay the same… the engineer class hasn’t changed much over the journey. As usual, you get a compact automatic weapon or shotgun, a rocket launcher of some description (anti tank or anti air), a repair tool or mines to deploy and a perk to enable. The minor

Recon
Not just a sniper, the recon class is also blessed with the ability to drop a spawn point beacon and a sensor that detects nearby enemies. We really like the concept of the mobile spawn point as it reduces the chance of a team getting stuck in their base/uncap and being pummelled with no chance of escape. It also means that a team can make a sustained assault on a position without having to commute from a known position. With the standard class weapons (sniper rifles), the recon class is still best used at medium to longer range but with the common unlocks like shotguns or a machine pistol, seeing one up close and coming off second best is just as likely. There has been a nice addition to the balancing system by Dice is the sniper scope glint, snipers aren’t so hidden anymore and a player will often see a glint from the scope of a recon class as they are taking aim. This serves a number or purposes, it gives the target a chance to seek cover, identifies the general location of the sniper and also encourages the sniper to move around.
